This week we are going to talk about the process of self-reflection and evaluation in helping you define your goals. Self-assessment is an ongoing process that requires being connected to your inner voice and a mindful practice. Do you believe in yourself? In your abilities? Whether you do or don’t, now is a good time for a self-assessment. As a matter of fact, it’s always a good time.
These days, many people appear so plugged into the world through their devices and social media that they’re not connected to themselves. And that is no way to help make better decisions and a far cry from being mindful. Self-assessment requires developing your own views and cultivating the ability to look closely at where you are so you can think through your problems. This process can often take time and clients at Healing Path Counselling Services often find it helpful to have guidance.
The only way we can reasonably decide what we want in the future and how we’ll get there is to know where we are right now and what is your current level of satisfaction. So first, take some time to think through and write down your current situation; then ask this question on each key point: Is that OK? The second action step you can take is to develop confidence. This task is not as easy as it may sound. Lack of confidence or low self-esteem is something that I see my clients struggling with and often where therapy may need to start. The most successful people are those who can manage the contradictions of life; who are aware of but not constrained by their limitations. Thirdly, you need to “talk it out”. Whether it is through a more formal setting such as counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or life coaching or with your family, close friends or mentor. You need to listen to them and listen to yourself.
The purpose of evaluation is twofold. First, it gives you an objective way to look at your accomplishments and your pursuit of the vision you have for life. Secondly, it shows you where you are so you can determine where you would like to go.
Join me next week when I outline how to define your dreams and goals.
